Shanghai China Old Shanghai

Old Shanghai

The heart of Old City is the Bund, featuring beautiful colonial architecture. The French Concession was once a part of international settlement, which later turned to a working class district and now is a hip bohemian area popular with the expats and vanguard artists. There are many elegant villas, decadent cafes and coffee shops. Some parts of Old Town are the most popular tourist attractions, some still require gentrification.

Shanghai Old Street was opened in 1999. This 825-m long street intersects with Guanyi Street. The eastern section extends to Renmin Road and the western - to Henan Road. The residences were beautifully redecorated to look as they did in the Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, with black tiles and white-washed walls, red columns and upturned eaves, expressing the folk styles of Shanghai's old downtown.

There are many stores, which date back to nineteenth century - Tonghanchun, Laotongsheng, Wuliangcai, Wanyouquan, Qiu Tianbao, Old Shanghai Tea House, Deshun Western Food Restaurant, Chunfeng Deyi Restaurant, Chunfeng Deyi Restaurant, Xishi Soya Bean curd Store, Dingniangzi Cloth Store, Rongshun Restaurant and Baoyintang. Traditional tea houses and clinic of Chinese medicine add to the ancient atmosphere of the place.

Daijing Lu food market reflects the atmosphere of Old Shanghai, with many tiny shops selling traditional goods, reflexology studios, birds in cages singing on balconies. In morning the parks are absolutely charming, with lush trees and fresh air. On sunrise there are many locals, practicing tai chi or other exotic exercises.

The old Yu Yuan Garden is an enchanting nature spot in the middle of the city, a traditional Chinese water garden with fountains and ponds. Golden carps swimming around the ponds are the symbol of good luck. The garden is a masterpiece of feng shui landscaping.
