Shanghai China Shanghai skyline

Shanghai skyline

Shanghai has an extremely distinctive skyline, in fact, it is a multi-storey city with definite sci-fi look. Instead of sprawling into vast suburban areas, the city went vertical. Its elevated road system is unique, there are even some ring roads that are entirely elevated. The project was highly appreciated as a means of handling traffic torrents.

There are more than 3,000 buildings more that 30 stores high, more than 140 are 100-storey.  Jin Mao Tower is the highest structure of continental China and fifth highest in the world.  Many of them have original futuristic design with inventive roofs and glass rooftop restaurants, colloquially called "flying saucers".

These steel and glass edifices shine under the golden rays of sun, like crystal, giving the city its unique look, and glow with thousands of bright neon lights in the night. Many of them have glass curtain walls and panoramic 360°C windows.

Theses buildings sprang up during the last decade, rapidly transforming Shanghai cityscape. More than 2,000 buildings are now being planned, but recently the government decided to impose restrictions on the construction of skyscrapers. Their weight causes the soil to sink, approximately 1, 5 cm a year. Further building will accelerate the process.

It is not so easy, for city continues to grow, and the land is very scarce. Now real estate prices in the downtown start from 1,400 dollars per square meter. Notwithstanding the governmental policy, there are plans for a new mega-skyscraper, which will become the nation's modern landmark rivaling the Great Wall. It will have 300 stores and accommodate 100,000 people. But there is much controversy as for this plan.
